The Subaru Crosstrek Out-Treks Competing SUVs from Honda and Mazda

With its unique style and SUV-meets-hatchback design, the Subaru Crosstrek is a standout option for drivers in the greater Boston area who are looking for a rugged crossover that's compact and easy to maneuver in Mass Pike traffic. At MetroWest Subaru, the Crosstrek is one of our most popular and most requested models, and we're excited to help you get to know it better.

Spacious seating for five, an adventurous personality that's up for anything, and a useful cargo hold area are all just some of the traits that make our Crosstrek special. But we know it may not be the only crossover option competing for your attention in the Brookline and Belmont area.

To demonstrate just what sets the Crosstrek apart from the competition, we've done a little side-by-side research for you. One competing model we've looked at is similar in class and size to the Crosstrek, while the other is actually in a larger size and class. But the Crosstrek easily offers more than both of them. Read on to learn more.

The Subaru Crosstrek vs. the Honda HR-V

  • Power and performance. The Subaru Crosstrek far outpaces the Honda HR-V in terms of power. While the Crosstrek has three great engines, including the hybrid, available depending on trim choice, the Honda has one. Plus, both Subaru engines offer more power than the Honda, which tops out at 141 horsepower, while the Crosstrek maxes out at a nice 182 horsepower for its top-tier powertrain. Additionally, when it comes to engaging performance, the Crosstrek allows you the choice between an automatic or manual transmission, but the Honda strictly comes paired to a continuously variable automatic.
  • Hybrid option. As with the Mazda comparison before this, the Crosstrek model's optional, plug-in hybrid powertrain makes it standout next to the Honda HR-V as well. While the Honda doesn't have a hybrid model, the Crosstrek offers hybrid efficiency and a nice, 17-mile electric-only driving range.
  • Standard features. Opting for the entry-level Crosstrek trim will also net you more standard amenities than the base-model Honda HR-V. For example, every Subaru gets standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and every base Crosstrek with an automatic transmission gets a menu of advanced safety technologies. But the Honda SUV doesn't offer these same features as standard equipment, and, in fact, doesn't even have them available until higher up in trim levels.

The Subaru Crosstrek vs. the Mazda CX-5

  • Size and space. While the Subaru Crosstrek falls in the subcompact class of crossover, offering a petite size that easily fits in any crowded Natick parking lot, the Mazda CX-5 is slightly larger. Considered a compact class SUV, the CX-5, like the Crosstrek, seats five people, has four doors, and a rear cargo area that's accessible via a liftgate. But, despite their difference in size, the Crosstrek manages to create an interior ride that's more comfortable and spacious, especially in the front seat, where our Subaru model offers more legroom and more headroom than the larger SUV.
  • Standard all-wheel drive. As a crossover from Subaru, the Crosstrek has standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive on every trim level. But the Mazda CX-5 doesn't. All-wheel drive is an option with the Mazda model depending on your trim and preference, but you'll have to request it special rather than get it standard as with the Subaru.
  • Hybrid option. One other thing that the Subaru Crosstrek offers but the Mazda does not? Hybrid capability. Norwood drivers can opt for a plug-in hybrid variant of the Crosstrek, powered by a 2.0-liter engine and electric motor that has 148 total system horsepower and a 17-mile electric-only driving range. Mazda doesn't have a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid available anywhere in its lineup.
