Out of 13 2014 SUV's, the all-new Subaru Forester forged ahead and took top honors from the editors at Motor Trend. To earn SUV of the year, the testing is extremely comprehensive and based off of six categories. These key criteria are:

- Advancement in Design
- Engineering Excellence
- Performance of Intended Function
According to Ed Loh, Editor in Chief at Motor Trend, the 2014 Forester "made a very compelling case" in each one of these categories.
